You’ve been driving around with your check engine light on for months, and the car runs fine, but now you need a smog check to renew your registration.
You go to Oreillys that advertises free diagnosis! Yippee! They tell you the code, description, even suggest a part to fix it. And wouldn’t you know they have the part IN STOCK! How convenient!
You buy the cheapest crap known to mankind, and have your buddy replace it for a 12er of Corona. He uses his palm scan tool and wala…the check engine light is now gone!
So, happy as heck you go get your smog done that day, but what’s this??? You failed! Your baffled because the check engine light is gone! How can this be??!!!!
Well, when you buddy made the check engine light magically disappear, he also reset the engine computer. So now you have to drive it for god knows how long to reset it.
ROAD TRIP!
Not so fast…on your road trip you stop off at 7-11 because they have a special on slurpees. You start to drive off and the damn check light is on again!
I JUST GOT IT FIXED! WHY IS MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, AGAIN??!!????
Because the free diagnosis you got from Oreilly’s is not diagnosis at all.
So being on the cheap, and thinking all shops are the same you find Joe Blo’s Garage and I’ll be damned if he doesn’t give free diagnosis. He sees the same exact code, finds a defective part, replaces it, clears the check engine light and charges you a mere $250, telling you to drive it before you get the smog inspection.
Two days later the check engine light is on again! Well…you’re no dummy, you take it back to the place that gave you free diagnosis, and they find yet another defective part, for another $400.
OMG the check engine light came on 3 days later!!!!!!!!!
I see this scenario almost daily, and although I understand the mentality, I have no sympathy for anybody that travels this path, and damn sure am not going to reduce my standards and prices because you spent a boatload of money for nothing.

No, I don’t give free diagnosis, but I do fix a lot of check engine lights that others couldn’t.
